Description

Planetarium of Strasbourg app is an interactive digital experience designed to raise awareness of the Strasbourg Planetarium. Through a mobile-friendly web application accessible via QR codes across the city, users embark on a narrative journey through the universe, from the sun to the farthest reaches of space. The experience combines storytelling, interactivity, and geolocation to connect the digital journey with a real-world destination.

Problem:

Despite an advertising campaign, many residents and visitors were unaware of the planetarium's existence or location. Our research revealed that most tourists didn't plan on going to the planetarium.

Solution:

We designed an interactive digital experience accessible via QR codes across Strasbourg. The mobile-friendly web application guides users through a scrolling journey through the stars, combining education, interactivity, and geolocation. The 'Aura' feature provides spatial guidance, while gamified elements enhance engagement and encourage visits.

My role:

As one of two designers on the project, I designed the UI across the full mobile experience, including the scroll-based narrative through the solar system and the Aura geolocation concept.

Application

The Planetarium application is a mobile-friendly web experience accessible via QR codes placed across Strasbourg, especially in the city center and cultural venues. Users scroll through a narrative journey exploring the solar system, from the Sun to Venus, Earth, Moon, Jupiter, and beyond.

The Aura - Geolocation Guide

Planetarium Aura geolocation feature
The Aura

An innovative feature we call 'The Aura' provides users with spatial guidance. It discreetly indicates the direction and distance to the planetarium based on the user's location. Functioning like a gyroscope, it moves around the screen edge as the user changes direction. This visual cue subtly draws users toward the planetarium, both virtually and physically, creating a seamless connection between the digital experience and the physical visit.

Gamified exploration

To enhance engagement, the app includes mini-games integrated into the journey. Users can tap on planets to trigger short games and earn badges. Collecting all badges could unlock a small discount voucher for the next planetarium visit. The games remain optional and non-intrusive, ensuring a fluid educational experience while adding playful motivation for exploration.

The research

Planetarium research findings
Research

Our observations and street interviews revealed critical visibility issues with the Strasbourg Planetarium.

This lack of visibility motivated us to create a project to help the planetarium reach a wider audience through interactive digital experiences integrated into the city's cultural and touristic spaces.
